Slumdog Millionaire Swept The Oscars 2009
Slumdog Millionaire swept the OScars by its feet defeating all the nominees in the Best Picture category including the Curios Case Of BEnjamin Button and The Reader. An underdog movie about a little guy overcoming life’s enormous obstacles swept the Oscars Sunday night, as Slumdog Millionaire racked up eight Academy Awards, including those for Best Picture and for its Director, Danny Boyle.
Sean Penn took the Best Actor award who said on his acceptance speech, “I did not expect this, and I know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often,” Penn said in his impassioned acceptance speech – in which he also acknowledged his fellow nominee, whose career had faded away in the ’90s. “Mickey Rourke rises again,” said Penn, “and he is my brother.”
Kate Winslet got the Best Actress award for her stint on the Reader. She confided to the audience in her acceptance speech that she first pretended to win an Oscar when she was 8 and looking in the bathroom mirror, holding a shampoo bottle.
Heath Ledger got a posthumous award for his role as the joker in the Dark Knight. And Penelope Cruz won an Oscar for best supporting actress for the very first time.
Matilda Will Have Heath Ledger’s Oscar Trophy If He’ll Win
His untimely death and his last finished movie made him a talk about actor last year up to now. His performance for the movie Dark Knight provided him a lot of post humus honor that he deserved. Again, Heath Ledger is nominated for the upcoming Oscars as best supporting actor for the film and it was reported that when his daughter Matilda turned 18, if ever he won on Sunday, that the trophy will go to her if she chose to.
Matilda is the only child of the star, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs last year. He was 28.
“In the event that Heath Ledger should be selected as the supporting actor recipient, the statuette will be held in trust for his daughter by her mother, Michelle Williams, until Matilda reaches the age of 18,” Bruce Davis, executive director of the academy, told the AP.
“At that point, she may execute what we call an heir’s agreement and keep the statuette forever – or, if she chooses not to do that, it will return to us.”

Also rumor of another Batman sequel has been bubbling over due to the appearance of Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) in the Dark Knight. Harvey Dent will become Batman’s protagonist (if ever a sequel will follow), as Two Face. This movie will surely become another hit in the box office not only because its a Batman movie but also because of Heath Ledger’s contribution and unparalleled portrayal. It will become a bitter sweet farewell for the young budding actor who have died due to accidental overdose.
