Can’t leave out any starlet who might have positive self-image. Must convince another she is too fat, too thin, too old, too something.

Well, they say that any criticism is good advertisement, but I am not sure pestering about one’s body weight is something Cate Blanchette invites as “good”. Not sure the stellar performer even needs such additional exposure to accelerate her career.

So it was a month ago that the press (from Daily Mail in the UK to New Zealand Herald to National Enquirer) went wild over images of Blanchette, photos taken—purportedly–a mere twenty-four hours apart. [see Daily Mail pics for comparisons.]
At a gala fashion event, Blanchette appeared in a spaghetti strap gown, shoulders bone thin and face looking like it was put through concentration camp horrors.

But then, reportedly, the next evening at another event, Kate appears looking healthy and glowing.

But I questioned the photographic strategies. In the first photo, she has white make-up; in the second, she has rouge and all. Moreover, in the first photo, Cate has an Annie Lennox do; but in the second, only a day later, her hair is touching her shoulders.

Yes, there are such things as extensions, but these would be longer and not all split and thin at such lengths as they are.

Further, the photos’ caption and accompanying article suggests that the choice of dress covers the emaciated shoulders and collar bone. But would that explain the face and arms (and hair) changing so drastically, as well?

What’s most disturbing is not only how much technology we have access to that can change and show changes—confusing us as to the reality of a star’s health—and how a publication can run a story with a photo they have dug up from God knows when, but how obsessed we get about trying to discover the truth about someone’s physical appearance. Mea culpa; I am included in that latter group.
